Lover's Eye Ring
$6,040.00
Erica Molinari has delivered this mesmerizing, hand-painted ring depicting the captivating lover’s eye. The eye, painted no bigger than half a centimeter, is framed in ruffled gold and held by a brushed gold band.
The lover’s eye dates back to 1785 when forbidden lovers were separated by royal law. Prince George of Wales was entirely infatuated by his lover, Maria who was a widow. Following his first proposal, Maria fled the country in fear of backlash, but while she was away, George wrote to her asking for her hand a second time. Enclosed in this same parcel was a tiny painting of George’s right eye, casting a fond gaze against a stark background. The purpose of the lover’s eye is an intimate gesture. A piece of your lover to keep near and dear. Though the original started as a single painting, these keepsakes have become a piece of jewelry to wear, encrusted in gold, pearls, and gems, as, after the lovers wed, Maria gifted George her own eye, brushed into a locket for him to cherish.
